Where | The Green Vine Eatery is a sweet – and surprisingly reasonable – restaurant in Contantia Nek. Although there is seating inside and outside, I would definitely recommend outside, as there are stunning views of the mountain, vineyards and city. This is the place for dog lovers. Not only do the resident dogs have free reign of the property, but guests are welcome to bring their own dogs with them. Their menu is rather small, but they have a lot of vegetarian options. It’s a slow-paced restaurant, so come with the intention of spending a few hours. Be warned, that although they are open every day, they close at 5pm.*
What | Despite the small menu, there are several burger options: beef, chicken, vegetarian and bunless, with chips or salad on the side. I chose the beef Gourmet Vine burger, with a salad. The presentation was lovely – the food arrived on a wooden board, with their logo on the bottom right-hand corner. The burger was place on the one side of the board, with two fried onion rings on top of it. The patty was herby, and well-seasoned. The gourmet element was the added mushrooms (in a creamy sauce?) and camembert, which had melted on the burger. I’m really not a mushroom fan, but the few that were on the burger added a lot of flavour. Overall, the burger was very tasty, with a pleasant texture. The salad wasn’t bad, but I didn’t like the dressing. My dad had the chicken burger (apparently, it was also delicious), with chips on the side. Definitely go for the chips! They were nicely cooked, and had a scrummy seasoning on them.
The beef Gourmet Vine Burger costs R95
Conclusion | I’d definitely recommend visiting this hidden gem and trying their gourmet burger. The flavours were fantastic, the feeling was serene and the views were breathtaking.
