Where | A friend and I went to Jakes at Steenberg Village for its Burger and Band special. It’s exactly as it sounds. Every Tuesday night, you can get two beef-based burgers for the price of one. Your experience will be determined by where you sit: the restaurant has moody, dim lighting, whereas outside has fairy lights, live music and is more peaceful. We chose to sit in the courtyard and sang with the acoustic music.
What | There are so many options! There are at least 9 burgers, with the added options of bunless, different sauces, normal fries and sweet potato fries. The 200g patties are usually grilled to medium, although I asked for medium-rare. I chose the Classic American Burger, because I wanted to try one of the simpler burgers. The enormous burger included mature cheddar, chipotle mayo, gherkin and fried onion rings. It was a rather messy eat. I ended up dissecting it and ate it in parts, so I would have preferred a smaller burger. Although I found the patty to be under-seasoned, I enjoyed the burger overall. I order fries as a side, which were delicious.
The Classic American Burger costs R99 (although I paid R49,50)
Conclusion | If the patty had had stronger seasoning, this burger could have contended as a favourite. I really appreciated the burger special, and thought that the meal was great value for money. The special, setting and different options made it the perfect girls’ night out spot.
